Born in Statesboro, Georgia, on March 8, 1922, the son of Lt. Col. James Barney Averitt and Jessie Olliff Averitt, Jack Nelson Averitt received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1945 from Georgia Teachers College, his Master of Arts degree at the University of Georgia in 1946, and his Ph. D. at the University of North Carolina, Chapel hill, in 1957. He was married to Addie Dunnaway, daughter of John Morgan and Blanche Lewis Dunnaway on March 18, 1948. A member of Phi Alpha Theta, the honorary history scholastic fraternity, he is also a member of the Southern and Georgia Historical Associations. Dr. Averitt has been closely involved with the Statesboro Music Club, Rotary International, and the Sigma Chi fraternity. He served as director of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Statesboro. During his career as Professor of History at Georgia Southern College (now University)(1945-80), he became first Dean of the Graduate School, now the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies.
