Essays on Helaman Pratt's Mormon mission in Mexico, after 1954.

Photocopies of three typewritten essays by Amy Pratt Romney and Verde Pratt Cardon. The first, Romney's "Ranching in Old Mexico," describes the Pratt family's life at the Cliff Ranch, their home in Mexico until 1891. Helaman Pratt and Miles P. Romney had both moved their large families to the ranch near Colonia Juarez, and Amy Romney outlines their daily activities there, such as church, school, and recreation. A second essay by Romney, "A Sketch of the Life of Helaman Pratt," gives a brief biographical account of Pratt's life from childhood until his death in 1909. The final essay, "Story of the Evacuation of the Mexican Colonies" by Verde Pratt Cardon, details the Mormon experience in Mexico following President Howard Taft's declaration that U.S. citizens in Mexico would not be protected from revolutionary activities while living there. Cardon describes Mexican attacks on Mormon settlements, the involvement of General Jose Ines Salazar, the evacuation by train of Mormon women and children to El Paso, and the eventual escape of most of the Mormon men and others who had stayed behind.
