Papers and photographs, 1858-1983. 1858-1983.

Much of the collection is comprised of correspondence addressed to Fred Kent from family members, friends and business contacts. Included are letters from Clara Hartman (courtship letters), Gordon Kent (Fred's brother), James, Barbara and Thomas Kent, and numerous friends. Names of particular note due to the quantity of correspondence include James Gurney, Robert T. Tidrick, Orval J. Baldwin, Homer Dodge, Tom Miller (of Eastman Kodak) and Robert F. Vance. The letters cover many topics including photography, birding, music and stamp collecting. The collection also includes many photographic prints and slides; University Photo Service orders; scientific journal articles; exhibition catalogs and awards; genealogy and family history materials; bibliographies related to Kent; miscellaneous writings by Kent; financial records; address books; records of trips taken in and out of Iowa; and records of bird observations, projects and activities. Documents in the collection before 1907 are those of Fred's grandparents and parents. They consist of deeds, abstracts, stocks, newspaper clippings, wills, maps and letters. Of particular interest are materials dated 1885-1939 related to Charles F. Kent's (Fred's father) drugstore in De Witt and an 1858 agreement between Kent's grandfather (Charles H. Kent) and Antoine LeClair. Materials related to the Hartman family and to Kent Park can also be found in the collection as well as some of Kent's photographic equipment.
