Professional photographer. Fred Kent was the son of Charles F. and Elizabeth Anderson Kent. He was born in De Witt, Iowa and attended De Witt High School and the University of Iowa. He married Clara Hartman in 1918, a union which produced 4 children (James, Thomas, Charles F. and Barbara). He was the university photographer for the University of Iowa where he earned a reputation for his work with medical photography and headed the University Photo Service. During World War I he taught aerial photography. He was an avid bird watcher. His photographs record family, friends, natural history subjects (especially birds), student life at the University, De Witt scenes, his experiences teaching aerial photography, etc.
