Samuel May photographs, ca. 1885-1899.

Photographs collected by Samuel May, Unitarian minister of Leicester, Mass. Most of the photographs relate to the Holley School, a charitable school for black children run by Caroline F. Putnam in Lottsburgh, Va. These photographs were sent by Putnam to May between 1896-1899 and include views of the interior and exterior of the school, photographs of Putnam and her companion Sallie Holley, abolitionist and teacher, and various students and other teachers at the school. There are also a number of cyanotype photographs of Russell family gravestones at the Phipps Street Cemetery in Charlestown, Mass., taken in Nov. 1899 by an unknown photographer.

Caroline F. Putnam was born in Massachusetts on July 29, 1826, and entered Oberlin College in 1848. There, she became involved in the abolitionist movement and met Sallie Holley (1818-1893), a fellow abolitionist who became Putnam's lifelong friend. After their graduation, the two women traveled around the northern United States to raise support for abolitionism, and both grew interested in the welfare of freed slaves during the early years of the Civil War.
