George A. and Frederick H. Lowell financial papers, 1869-1908.

A collection of financial papers of a father and son living in Calais, Maine. Included is a cashbook, 1869-1873, for Geo. A. Lowell & Co. and a small collection of correspondence to George A. Lowell from the Portland Safe Deposit Company and the Portland Trust Company concerning his accounts during 1894 to 1899. Included also is a small collection of invoices, receipts, and payment orders for the Union Congregational Church in Calais during 1907 and 1908, many of them signed by F.H. Lowell as treasurer of the church. Many of the payment orders are drawn from the church account at the International Trust & Banking Company in Calais. Included also is a small collection of correspondence during 1900 to 1901 regarding a loan of $2800 to William F. Mercier of Princeton, Maine. Most of the correspondence is addressed to F.H. Lowell.

George Albert Lowell was born in Calais, Maine, in 1831 and died there in 1907. During the gold fever in 1849 he and his brother Reuben B. went to California but two years later returned to Calais where George entered the retail store business. In 1879 he became the treasurer of the Calais Savings Bank. In 1882 he was elected city treasurer and held that office for 8 years. He was a member of the Universalist Church. Frederick H.
