Letter, June 1886, from John A. Logan compliments his work on "the canvass" and hopes to see him at the convention. Four letters from Shelby Cullom, 1887 and 1888, discuss the interstate commerce act; the anarchists involved in the Haymarket incident and the pardoning of two; and Joseph Medill, a writer for the Chicago Tribune, and his opposition to Cullom's campaign and support of Walter Q. Gresham for the Republican presidential campaign of 1888. He refers, in 1887, to Tanner's misfortune and his daughter's grief and urges him to do his duty and "time will work it's own relief". One letter, June 1888, from Joseph Medill, discussing his objections to Cullom and his campaign. One letter to his daughter, Nov. 1896, re: his election and tells her he has enclosed a check "to rig you up for the inauguration ball". Letter, Sept. 1900, to Charles Cohen in Philadelphia re: report on the unveiling of the U.S. Grant statue. Appointment by Tanner, for N. Campbell, to office of Police Magistrate of Mackinaw, Ill.
