Twenty-first governor of Illinois, grew up near Carbondale, started in Republican politics at the age of 26 and worked his way up until with the help of his friend ex-Governor and U.S. Senator Shelby Cullom he became governor in 1897. In 1900 he ran against Cullom for the Senate and lost. His first wife died in 1887 and he married again in 1897.
