Winfred W. Murphy papers, 1900-1973 bulk 1919-1973.

The Murphy papers consists of 6 audio tapes, 10 file folders of correspondence, speeches, biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, printed material, and oversize and framed photographs. These materials contain information and photogrpahs of or about: 1) F.L. Smith of Oldsmobile; 2) Richard H. "Trainload" Collins (photograph); 3) W.A.P. John's article on Durant, 1923; 4) Durant's "General Motors was my Baby"; 5) Bound volume of "Durant Success"--Sales periodical for Durant dealers; 6) Jacob Newmark's "My 25 Years with W.C. Durant." Correspondence partly consists of letters from W.C. Durant and Richard Scharchburg. Also includes four letters between Murphy and Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Sloan was at the time writing his book, "My Years with General Motors." Murphy was asked to review and comment on some of the early chapters. The W.W. Murphy collection is small but its size does not diminish its significance to the career of W.C. Durant. The collection's potential for research is limited only by its size. The numerous photographs are especially useful in visually documenting Durant's career in automobiles.
