Jane Neuberger Goodsell was born in 1921 in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from Reed College in 1942 with a degree in English literature. She began writing in the 1950s and published many children's books between 1965 and 1988. Her humor column, From Soup to Nonsense, was syndicated nationally.
