Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat. King (1924- ) was born in Eureka, Wisconsin to a German-American family. He moved to Merrill (Wisconsin) at age one where he still lives today. King served in the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division in World War II and saw combat during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
