General Hospital 21 collections, 1917-1968.

These collections document the distinguished service of Base Hospital 21 and the 21st General Hospital during the First and Second World Wars. The General Hospital 21 Collections consist of approximately 1,800 items from ten separate archival collections held by the Bernard Becker Medical Library. The items include photographic prints, negatives, lantern slides, sketches, documents, correspondence, reports, identification cards, badges, and memorabilia donated by members (or relatives of members) of Base Hospital 21 and the 21st General Hospital. Prominent members of Base Hospital 21 included commanding officers Fred T. Murphy and Borden S. Veeder, and chief nurse Julia C. Stimson. Lee D. Cady served as commanding officer of the 21st General Hospital; Lucille S. Spalding served as chief nurse of the unit throughout the war. Corresponding online exhibit features images of over 570 items from the collections and articles about the history of both Base Hospital 21 and the 21st General Hospital. Base Hospital 19 began in 1916, when 11 Rochester area physicians formed a unit of the Medical Corps Reserve. By 1917, when the unit was mobilized, 134 doctors, nurses and enlisted men from the Rochester area were ready. The unit reached Vichy, France, in June 1918, and established Base Hospital No. 19, a 2,000 bed facility. The hospital served over 11,000 patients during the 6 months it operated.
