Papers pertaining to Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Mann Randolph and Monticello, 1791-1821.

The papers pertain chiefly to Jefferson's interest in agricultural and scientific matters. Two of Jefferson's orders for goods from James Leitch, 1820 September 28 and 1821 June 21, are the only items in his hand. Thomas Mann Randolph items (frequently in the hand of Martha Jefferson Randolph) include a plan of "Varina"; a list of trees and shrubs by their Linnaean names; weather records, 1791-1793, including temperature and barometric pressure, 1791; agricultural memoranda, ca. 1793, 1794, dealing chiefly with crop rotation; and miscellaneous memoranda pertaining to agriculture and rural life including a zoological note about Richard Bradley's discovery concerning the distribution of the spawn of pike; and a note on the ciurculation of sap. The collection also contains manuscripts [by Thomas Mann Randolph?] including a tirade against depsotic rulers and their schemes; a draft political essay in the guise of a letter to the editor of the "Patriote francois," 1792, attempting to disassociate the American people from the anti-republican views expressed by Gouverneur Morris; a draft letter to an unidentified newspaper editor claiming President Wasington has deviated from former views and is too attached to British and monarchical principles; and a similar in content draft resolution in defense of the Constitution from threats by proponents of British and monarchical principles, probably ca. 1793 in response to the Citizen Genet affair.

ca. 35 items.
