Materials compiled by Mabel Edwards including conference reports; correspondence; records of the Iowa Council of Homemaker Services (1966-1969); materials related to low rent housing in Iowa City (1964-1968); Iowa Commission on Aging materials (1965-1971); Iowa Nursing Home Association materials (1961-1965); clippings, correspondence, newsletters and advertisements related to nursing homes around Iowa; reports of various county senior citizen and mental health organizations; survey forms including extensive materials from the 1960 statewide survey, Life After Sixty; reports from various committees on aging; Iowa population statistics, especially statistics relevant to the aged; materials related to nursing home administration education. The collection contains extensive runs of newsletters from the Iowa Nursing Home Association (INHA news and OMINHA bulletin), Meth-Wick Manor in Cedar Rapids (Life at Meth-Wick) and the Mayflower Home in Grinnell (Mayflower log). Extensive records and letters related to Oaknoll are also included.

The Institute of Gerontology was established in 1953, in recognition of Iowa's responsibility to its people with relationship to the problem of an increasing number of older citizens. Mabel Edwards was co-founder of the University of Iowa Institute of Gerontology, which operated from 1953 until 1971. As a research associate at the Institute she collected a wide variety of materials related to the aged in Iowa.
