Correspondence documents William's war service. Especially well documented is his family's life in Chicago during the war. The effect of rationing on family and business is a major topic. The family's weekly golf outings and Dorothy's horseback riding are discussed. Hoffman, a railroad buff, discusses the rail systems he sees in France and Germany in 1951. He collected model trains and books about trains and frequently sent material home. Dorothy kept him updated on changes made to the train system and street cars in Chicago. The earlier material contains 7 letters, 1918-1919, from Charles Meyer while stationed in Texas and France. Also letters, 1929-1930 document home life while William is at Civilian's Military Training Camp at Fort Sheridan, Ill.
