Jared Andrus Abell papers, 1861-1864.

Civil War letters to "Dear Friend" Hannah B. Abell, Colchester, Ct., dating chiefly from late Dec. 1862 until Pvt. Abell's death and documenting his military service with the Seventh Connecticut Volunteers in coastal South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia. Topics discussed include bombardment of Charleston and campaign against Battery Wagner; military discipline; re-enlistment campaign of Dec. 1863; support for President Lincoln among the troops; Christmas day in camp; and Abell's opinions re company commander Capt. John Dennis, Gen. Quincy A. Gillmore, African-American soldiers, and women of the South. Places represented include Beaufort, Morris Island, and St. Helena Island, S.C.; Fernandina and St. Augustine, Fla.; and Old Point Comfort, Va. [formerly Elizabeth City County, now City of Hampton, Va.]. Letters of particular interest include: 8 Mar. 1863, re African-American First South Carolina Volunteers with whom Abell's regiment was garrisoned in Florida and their assault upon the village of St. Mary's; 6 Aug. 1863, re African-American troops of the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts at the assault on Battery Wagner; and 5 June 1864, noting losses sustained by the Seventh Connecticut since arriving in Virginia. Includes undated photographs of the tombstones of Jared and Hannah Abell and photocopies of regimental reports documenting Jared A. Abell's enlistment and death.
