Thomas O. Russell papers, 1908-1954.

Collection consists of designs and plans made for the Southern Pacific Railroad and minor railroad lines in Oregon and California, 1908-1918; the Minarets & Western Railroad, Fresno, California, and the Sugar Pine Lumber Company, Madera, California, 1921-1926. Documents and correspondence are included from the Itabira Railroad project, 1929-1935. From 1943, the files consist of records of privately contracted engineering projects for the California Oregon Power Company, G.F. Atkinson Company, and other projects.

Thomas O. Russell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and came to Oregon in 1909. He was a designer and builder of railroad lines and railroad facilities. From 1929 to 1935, Russell was chief engineer for the Companhia Itabira do Brasil, working for Percival Farquhar, planning the Itabira Railroad. From the description of Thomas O. The Southern Pacific Railroad was founded in 1865 and was purchased in 1869 by Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark Hopkins, better known as the Big Four. It was the first railroad to connect Los Angeles to the rest of California and its lines extended as far as New Orleans.
