Manuscript of article written about Belle Reynolds' service during the Civil War and her commission given by Governor Yates of Illinois. Also briefly describes her work as a physician after the war in Chicago, California and the Philippines. A signed note by Belle Reynolds telling who Mr. Morris is and that he had written her re: the article which appeared in an Omaha newspaper. Also a short note by Thomas C. Shelley who had served in the 17th Infantry with Mr. Reynolds re: Belle's later life.

A school principal in Lewis, Iowa in 1864. This is the town where Belle Macomber Reynolds' father lived. Morris later lived in Lincoln, Neb. Reynolds was the only woman commissioned a major in the Civil War. Belle had moved to Illinois when she married William S. Reynolds in 1860.
