John Denn was born in 1751, in Salem, New Jersey, the son of John and Elizabeth Denn. At an early age, he was apprenticed to his uncle David Bacon of Philadelphia, a hatter, to learn the trade. When he was of age, Denn returned to Salem County, and opened his own business in the village of Hancocks Bridge. A few years later, he relocated his business to the town of Salem.
