Victor du Pont (1767-1827) was born in Paris, the eldest son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. After completing his education, he was employed as one of three sous-chiefs in his father's office at the Bureau du Commerce in Paris. In 1787 he obtained a position as private secretary to the Comte de Moustier, the French minister to the United States. Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, the son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours, was born in Paris on June 24, 1771. In 1787, he was accepted as a student in the Regis des Poudres, a government agency for the manufacture of gunpowder which was directed by Antoine Lavoisier. In 1800 Eleuthère Irénée du Pont emigrated to the United States and began investigating sites for a black powder manufactory.
