Papers date from McArthur's time when private secretary to Congressman John M. Baer and Senator Edwin F. Ladd, thus much deals with their careers, particularly Ladd. Includes correspondence and speeches (both typed and handwritten), although authorship not always clear. There are several documents related to McArthur's publication, The Pericope, and his attempt, apparently, to be appointed to fill Ladd's senate seat after his death in office. There is also a number of documents and form letters related to the American Honest Money League, sometimes given as National Honest Money Association.

Dugald H. McArthur was born in Ontario, Canada in 1864. He came with his parents to Bottineau County, N.D. and operated a drug store. He married Amelia Knapp in 1888. He was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1902 on the Democratic ticket and served until 1910. He then served as Democratic State Chairman until 1914.
