Official order, in French, of Pierre Clement de Laussat, Jan. 12, 1804, to Dehalt de Lassus, transferring Illinois lands, or upper Louisiana, to the government of the United States. An 1897 St. Louis Republican article, on the 75th anniversary of the transfer. Photocopies of documents. Copy of a typed translation and some handwritten translations of the order.

Pierre Clément de Laussat, born at Pau, was receiver-general at Pau in 1789, arrested in 1793, released, became paymaster general of the army of the Pyrénées Orientales in 1793, and was a member of the Conseil des Cinq-Cents in 1797. In 1802 he was appointed préfet coloniale de la Louisiane and from 1823-25 he was commandant and administrator of French Guiana.
