Laussat, Pierre-Clément de, 1756-1835
Variant namesPierre Clément de Laussat, born at Pau, was receiver-general at Pau in 1789, arrested in 1793, released, became paymaster general of the army of the Pyrénées Orientales in 1793, and was a member of the Conseil des Cinq-Cents in 1797. In 1802 he was appointed préfet coloniale de la Louisiane and from 1823-25 he was commandant and administrator of French Guiana.

Pierre-Clément de Laussat was a French diplomat appointed colonial prefect of Louisiana by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. He arrived in the colony on March 26, 1803, just two weeks before Napoleon decided to sell the Louisiana colony to the United States. Laussat transferred the colony to General James Wilkinson and William Charles Cole Claiborne on December 20, 1803. He left Louisiana on April 21, 1804 and served as colonial prefect of Martinique between 1804 and 1809.
