General description of the collection: The Andrew D. Bruce photograph collection consists of photos which thoroughly cover the life and career of Lieutenant General Bruce. There is a photo of him as an infant, followed by others of him as a child, teenager, college student, and young Army officer. He graduated from Texas A & M in 1917, commissioned, and quickly sent overseas to the 2nd Division. His WWI photos are scenes in France, taken some time after the war ended. This collection is composed principally of albums for each major segment of General Bruce's career with the later part getting the heaviest photo coverage. He started and commanded the Tank Destroyer Center at Fort Meade and at Camp Hood in 1941-1943, with an album for each site. Three albums reflect his command of the 77th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater of WWII and on occupation duty on Hokkaido, Japan, to 1956. There is an album of photos of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea, which he commanded in 1946-1947. He then retired to Fort Sam Houston as Deputy Commander of the 4th Army. Other albums cover specific subjects such as a reception at Fort Hood, visits to Trieste and the Turkish War College (1954), the death of the last Confederate soldier in 1959, and General Douglas MacArthur's last birthday party in 1964.

General Andrew Davis Bruce was the third President and the first Chancellor of the University of Houston. Bruce became president of the University on September 1, 1954, and chancellor in December 1956. He retired from the University after the 1960-61 academic year. Bruce had served in the United States army for 37 years, serving in both World Wars, and was the governor of Hokkaido, Japan, during the United States occupation.
