Bruce, Andrew D. (Andrew Davis), 1894-1969
Variant namesGeneral Andrew Davis Bruce was the third President and the first Chancellor of the University of Houston. Bruce became president of the University on September 1, 1954, and chancellor in December 1956. He retired from the University after the 1960-61 academic year. Bruce had served in the United States army for 37 years, serving in both World Wars, and was the governor of Hokkaido, Japan, during the United States occupation. Bruce retired to North Carolina, where he died in 1969. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Andrew Davis Bruce (1894-1969) was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned a B.S. from Texas A&M University in 1916 and commissioned in the Army infantry in 1918. With the 2nd Division in World War I, he fought in the offensives of Verdun, Aisne-Marne, San Miguel, Champagne and Meuse-Argonne. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1933, Army War College in 1936, and Naval War College in 1937. He rose through the ranks to brigadier general in February 1942 and major general in September 1942. He was commanding general of the Tank Destroyer Command from 1942 to 1943 and then the 77th Infantry Division from 1943 to 1946. His post-war assignments included commanding general of the 7th Infantry Division, deputy commanding general of the Fourth Army, and commandant of the Armed Forces Staff College. He retired at the rank of lieutenant general in August 1954. His awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, three Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

Andrew Davis Bruce was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He served as a 2nd lieutenant, 49th Infantry Regiment; 1st lieutenant, 9th Infantry Regiment; captain, 5th Machine Gun Battalion; major and lieutenant colonel, 4th Machine Gun Battalion; lieutenant colonel, 2nd Ammunition Train; 1st Lieutenant, Machine Gun Officer, Southern Dept.; captain, 24th, 29th, and 33rd Infantry Regiments and major, 36th Infantry Regiment. He served as a 1st lieutenant through lieutenant colonel, Infantry; colonel, brigadier general and major general commanding Tank Destroyer Center; major general, 77th and 7th Infantry Divisions; deputy commander, 4th Army; lieutenant general, Armed Forces Staff College. During his career he also planned and established the Tank Destroyer Center at Fort Meade and then at Camp Hood during 1941-1943.

After the war, Bruce commanded the 7th Infantry Divison in Korea from 1946 to 1947 and then, the 4th Army at Fort Sam Houston. He was also an lieutenant general at the Armed Forces Staff College (AFSC). He died in 1969.
