Contains details of Grimmett's training camp experiences, particularly receiving initial training as a bombadier in the Army Air Corps, but being transferred, last-minute, to the infantry. Also contains a description of his combat experiences in Germany, including participating in the Battle of the Bulge and an account of securing Remagen Bridge over the Rhine. Following the conclusion of the war, Gimmett remained in Germany as part of the occupation and participated in the army's orchestra.

Served in the US Army during the war from 1943-1946, and was assigned to the 78th Infantry Division, 311th Regiment. Grimmett served as the company bugler prior to engaging in combat, and was later made a radio messenger for the company commander. He achieved the rank of private first class.
