Autobiography of Benjamin Platt, begun on January 1, 1899. Platt begins with descriptions of his childhood and conversion to the Mormon Church, and his following of Brigham Young and Franklin D. Richards' calls for English Mormons to cross the plains with handcarts (Platt writes of the economical advantages of this plan). After arriving in the United States, Platt writes of delays in the company's plains crossing due to hostile Indians and inclement weather conditions. They were urged to stay at Florence, Nebraska, for the winter, but Platt writes that they did not want to stay with a company of Josephites. They began to encounter snow storms after crossing the Platte River, and at Fort Kearney Platt was told by Mormons from Oklahoma to turn back. He continued on, but estimated that about one hundred of six hundred Mormons in the company died before reaching Fort Harmony. Platt also includes a narrative of seeing John Doyle Lee depart for Mountain Meadow, as well as the circumstances of his return and Platt's conversation with Don Carlos Shirts on the incident. Platt refers throughout to his activities with the LDS Church, and the final pages of the autobiography are devoted to a listing of his children's birth and baptism dates.
