Benjamin Platt was born on April 12, 1833, in Lancashire, England, as one of thirteen children in an impovershed family. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John Yates and Isaac Duffin in 1848. Platt married Mary Greaves in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1856, and that same year the couple departed for Utah, sailing from Liverpool aboard the ship Oregon. After a series of delays and difficult winter travel, they arrived in Salt Lake City in November 1856. Platt was among the early settlers of Pinto, Utah.
