Felix Grundy Coats (c.1829-1916) traveled with his father from Henry County, Missouri, to the California gold fields in 1849. He spent the next year prospecting at Grass Valley, Bear River, and Placerville, California. Coats' father returned to Missouri in 1851, but he was joined in California by his brother Bill.
