Correspondence, speeches, ephemera, miscellaneous documents, photographs, clippings and a diary relating to Hull's military service, political and professional life, and his years as a student as Iowa Wesleyan College and the Cincinnati Law School. A portion of the collection's materials cover the military career of Hull's son, John Adley Hull, who served as Judge Advocate with the U.S. Volunteer Army, 52nd Iowa Infantry, during the Spanish American War. Included in this material are documents from garrison court martial cases held at Camps Lakeland and Rodgers in Florida, and correspondence between father and son.

Lawyer, Civil War officer, Iowa government official and U.S. congressman. Hull served with the 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He entered politics as a Republican Party member and served at the state level as Secretary of the Senate (1872-1880), Secretary of State (1878-1884), and Lt. Governor (1885-1889). He served as the representative for Polk and Davis counties in the U.S. Congress (1891-1911) during which time he chaired the Committee on Military Affairs. After his retire...
