In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Abby Leach, was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, and came to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the hopes of continuing her studies with Harvard professors.
