Correspondence, legal and business papers of the Berkeleys of "Barn Elms," Middlesex County; of Aldie, Loudoun County, and of Albemarle County, Virginia. The bulk of the papers concern farming operations on lands in Gloucester, Middlesex and other counties. Topics include wars, religion, and county, colony and state politics. There are papers of the first Edmund Berkeley; official correspondence of Sir William Berkeley as Governor of the Virginia Colony; and items pertaining to Bacon's Rebellion, the vestry of Christ Church parish, Johnson's Island Prison for Confederates, and the political career of State legislator William Noland. Correspondence with, or papers pertaining to Sam Houston, Sir Henry Chicheley, and Henry Bennet, earl of Arlington, are included. Miscellaneous items include genealogical charts; Confederate envelopes; a photograph album of the commissioning of the U.S.S. Berkeley.
