Papers, 1863-1946 (bulk 1875-1910).

The collection contains correspondence, ledgers, notebooks, personal narratives, reports, and clippings generated by ancestors and relatives of Theodore L. Steele, particularly Horace and Martha Nicholson McKay. These items include papers of the Consumers Gas Trust Company, a history of Unitarianism in Indianapolis, and letters from Lucy Stone. The papers of Elizabeth Nicholson include letters related to the woman's suffrage movement and accounts by former slaves about the Underground Railroad. Other material in the collection includes drafts of Selma Neubacher's contributions to the book "The House of the Singing Winds," and a scrapbook kept by Valentine Nicholson that includes references to spiritualism.

Theodore L. Steele (1905-1995) was an Indianapolis architect who specialized in institutional and industrial design. He was the grandson of Indiana artist T.C. (Theodore Clement) Steele (1847-1926). Steele and Selma Neubacher Steele (ca. 1875-1945) co-authored a biography of T.C. Steele. Selma Neubacher Steele was an artist and T.C. Steele's second wife.
