Robert J. Willis was born in 1923 in Utica, N.Y., the son of John D. and Marie Willis. He enlisted in the Army at Utica on January 22, 1943. At the time of enlistment he was unmarried and had attended four years of high school. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. and was assigned to Headquarters company of the 86th Infantry, 1st Battalion.
