Buckhorn was founded as a Christian school in 1902 by Presbyterian minister, Harvey Murdoch to serve the isolated residents of Perry and adjacent counties. By 1935 the school program included grades one through twelve for over 200 resident boys and girls. Besides dormitories and classrooms, there was a gym, farm, dairy herd, and the only hospital in a 100 miles radius.
