Buckhorn Children's Center (Buckhorn, Ky.)

Hide Profile

Buckhorn was founded as a Christian school in 1902 by Presbyterian minister, Harvey Murdoch to serve the isolated residents of Perry and adjacent counties. By 1935 the school program included grades one through twelve for over 200 resident boys and girls. Besides dormitories and classrooms, there was a gym, farm, dairy herd, and the only hospital in a 100 miles radius. During the 1950's, Buckhorn's focus shifted from education to care for dependent children, with the establishment of the Presbyterian Child Welfare Agency (later, Buckhorn Children's Center). Since the 1980's, Buckhorn Children's Center provides care and treatment for children ages eleven to fifteen on campus and at group homes in several off campus locations.
