General description of the collection: The J. Leslie Kincaid papers include a pamphlet, FINAL REPORT ON THE VESUVIUS EMERGENCY OPERATION (Naples: M.V. Masula, 1944) by H. Bentley and J.R. Gregory under the auspices of Allied Control Commission - Headquarters Naples Province. This pamphlet describes the response of Allied occupation forces under Kincaid, the Provincial Commissioner of Naples Province, to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (March 18-28, 1944) and is the most important piece in the collection. Also included is a capsule biography of Kincaid (1884-1963) summarizing his military service on the Mexican border in 1916, in the two World Wars, and as the Adjutant General of New York (1921-1922). Three personal letters to Kincaid from Dwight D. Eisenhower (October 19th, 1948; February 3, 1958; and May 13, 1961) are also on file.

It is unclear exactly how these volumes came into the State's possession. They may have been forwarded to the Adjutant General who in turn transferred them to the State Library; the State Library then transferred the volumes to the State Archives in the spring of 1978. A second possibility is that the volumes could have been donated to the Bureau of Military Statistics. In 1911 and 1912 the Adjutant General's Office transferred a large number of items collected by the bureau to the State Library...

James Leslie Kincaid was an officer in the United States (U.S.) Army. He served in the Mexican Border Region in 1916, participated in World War I (WWI), and was the Adjutant General of New York from 1921-1922.
