The Confederate Submarine Hunley documents, written, compiled and arranged by Eustace Williams, 1957-1961.

The Hunley was the first submarine successfully used in warfare. It was built in 1863 by W.A. Alexander at the Mobile machine shop of Park and Lyons. It was designed by James McClintock and Baxter Watson, and financed by Horace L. Hunley. The collection includes a reproduction of the drawing of the Confederate submarine Hunley made by Conrad Wise Chapman, 1863, as well as portrait photographs of Horace Lawson Hunley and James R. McClintock, several early submarines, and the Housatonic, the first warship torpedoed by a submarine. In 1961 a supplement was created by Eustace Williams in response to Bruce Catton's version of the Confederate submarine history (folder 2).
