The H.L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine almost forty feet long, was built at Mobile, Ala., and privately developed and paid for by Horace Lawson Hunley, James McClintock, and Baxter Watson. It was launched in July 1863 and shipped by rail to Charleston, S.C., on August 12, 1863. On February 17, 1864, the Hunley attacked and sank the 1800-ton, steam-powered sloop-of-war USS Housatonic in Charleston harbor, but sank soon after, drowning all eight crewmen. It became the first submarine to sink a warship.

A smaller submarine named Pioneer was also built by Hunley, McClintock, and Watson in New Orleans, La., in 1861-1862. The Pioneer was tested in February 1862 in the Mississippi River and later towed to Lake Pontchartrain for additional trials, but the Union advance towards New Orleans caused the men to abandon development and scuttle Pioneer the following month.
