Versatile Control Number: 39/TCH/905. RG 2007-33. Architectural drawings that document remodeling of buildings and fixtures of the Traverse City State Hospital. The buildings depicted include the main building, cottages, Children's unit, Superintendent's residence, power house, cold storage and service building, laundry, and shop building. This collection consists of floor plans, elevations, details, documentation of sewer systems, and maps of the Traverse City area. Documents the work of numerous architects and architectural firms. Like many mental institutions from that era, the hospital started with a single Kirkbride building and a few related service buildings. (Kirkbride refers to the design advocated by nineteenth century Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride). The north wing was for female patients and the south wing was for male patients. The grand center wing, replaced in the 1960s, housed administration. The Kirkbride building at Traverse City State Hospital has been known for many years as Building 50. These blueprints represent the work of various architects and architectural firms including George W. Lloyd, Swanson Associates, and Field, Graheck, Bell & Kline.

In 1911 under an Act passed by the Legislature the facility was renamed The Traverse City State Hospital. The final name change for the facility was to the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, which took effect on January 1, 1978.
