Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital (Mich.)

Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital was opened in 1885 as the Northern Michigan Asylum at Traverse City. In 1911 under an Act passed by the Legislature the facility was renamed The Traverse City State Hospital. The final name change for the facility was to the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, which took effect on January 1, 1978. The facility operated under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Mental Health from 1945 until it closed in 1989.

Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital was opened in 1885 as the Northern Michigan Asylum at Traverse City. In 1911 under an Act passed by the Legislature the facility was renamed The Traverse City State Hospital. The final name change for the facility was to the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital, which took effect on January 1, 1978. The Department of Mental Health was created by Public Act 271 of 1945 replacing the State Hospital Commission. The "Mental Health Code," P.A. 258 of 1974 updated, revised and consolidated the statutes relating to Mental Health. All state hospitals were put under the jurisdiction of the new department. Executive Order 1996-1 created the Department of Community Health. Under this Executive Order the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health were consolidated along with several other health care related agencies and offices.
