Lewis Birdsall Harris was born in Waterloo, New York on July 1, 1816, the third child of John R. Harris and Jane Birdsall. When his mother left New York for Texas in 1833, he remained at the home of his grandparents until the spring of 1836. Although he arrived in Texas on April 21, he quickly joined the Texian Army. Mary Jane Harris was born August 17, 1819, to John Richardson and Jane Birdsall Harris. She married Andrew Briscoe in 1837 in Texas. After Andrew's death in 1849, Mary Jane and her 4 children moved to her father-in-law's plantation in Mississippi. In 1852 she returned to Texas. Parmenas Briscoe, the eldest son of Mary Jane Harris Briscoe and Andrew Briscoe, was born in 1839 in Houston, Texas. Parmenas served in Company 1, 2nd Battalion of the Infantry of Waul's Texas Legion during the Civil War.
