Bound photocopy of a travel journal of a young man, Samuel S. Griscom, who visited New York City and then travelled up the Hudson to Poughkeepsie in 1824. It includes brief descriptions of the Rose Street meetinghouse, the American Museum (of Natural History), the Penitentiary, the Alms House and its school, the dyeing factory of Jacob Bryan, and other sites of interest. He also mentions Anna Braithwaite, Elias Hicks, DeWitt Clinton, Willett Hicks, and others.

Elias Hicks was an eminent Quaker minister from Jericho, Long Island, N.Y. He was a farmer, partner in a tannery, and had a knowledge of surveying. Samuel S. Griscom was a Hicksite Quaker schoolteacher. The son of William and Anne Stewart Griscom, Samuel S. was born in Salem, New Jersey, and moved from Wilmington, Delaware, to Philadelphia, and then back to New Jersey in 1842.
