The collection contains copies of research on the family including articles, correspondence, legal documents, and Bible records. The collection contains some material for the related Bowling, Combs, Gilbert, McIntosh and Wilder families. The collection also contains an electrostatic copy of the 1846 will of Robert E. Lee showing that he owned a slave named "Nancy" and her three children, together with a letter from Judith S. Hynson of the Jessie Ball DuPont Memorial Library at Stratford, Va., quoting an 1856 letter from Lee to his wife on the subject of slavery.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. From 1837 to 1841 he was superintending engineer for the harbor of St. Louis and the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Robert E.
