Herbert Wendell Gleason was a professional photographer who recorded many areas of the North American continent between 1899-1934. He photographed western wilderness areas, California missions, the horticultural experiments of Luther Burbank, Eastern mansions and formal gardens, Boston's Arnold Arboretum, both cultivated and wild flowers, the Canadian Rockies, Yosemite and other National Parks. Many of his photographs are compiled in his book "Western Wilderness of North America."

Retired from ministry 1899; took up photography as livelihood, practicing almost to his death Oct. 4, 1937.
(Cont.) Moved back to Mass. & began to make photographic trips to Concord, Fall 1899. Pioneer environmentalist, drawn to writings of Henry David Thoreau. Over 38 years, Gleason purposefully captured locations, wildlife, & plants that Thoreau had known & described. Asked by Houghton Mifflin to provide photos. for 20 v. 1906 Walden & Manuscript Editions of Thoreau's writings.
(Cont.) Involved in national park movement. Appointed Interior Dept. Inspector by Stephen Mather (1st Director of National Park Service, Gleason's friend & photographic subject). Made expeditions to photograph national parks & areas under consideration as park lands. Travelled to Rockies, Sierras, Yellowstone, Bryce, Zion, & Grand Canyons, Pacific coast, Mt. Rainier, Alaska; also Canadian Rockies.
(Cont.) Gleason's western photos. were used in lectures by Mather, by Park Service, & by Gleason himself. Some photos. appeared in National Geographic, some illustrated writings of John Muir. Photographed & presented in illustrated lecture horticultural experiments of his friend Luther Burbank. During 1920s & 1930s, photographer for Arnold Arboretum in Boston. Roland Wells Robbins--archaeologist, historian, Thoreauvian, & resident of Lincoln, Mass.--came into possession of Gleason's negatives in late 1940s.
