Letters to James Hamilton, 1810-1813.

Cruse, Alexandria, Va. writes to Hamilton, Carlisle, Pa., concerning business matters, dividends from the investments of the two men in bridge stock, banks, other stocks, a brewery rented by Cruse, and a social visit. Other topics touched on include a levee at the White House given by James and Dolley Madison and attended by Secretaries Gallatin and Smith; Potomac River bridge endangered by ice; concerns about democracy and the government; Carlisle College; a fire in Alexandria destroying 30 houses; the potential influence on business of steam boats; and the effects of the British blockade of the rivers and Chesapeake Bay. He briefly notes a visit by David Bailie Warden. The collection also contains two clippings contained in the letters.
