Collection includes clippings, correspondence, publications, scrapbook and notebook, programs, addresses, and conference information. The collection focuses on the time period when Gartenhaus served as a missionary with the Home Mission Board, 1921-1948. Many of the clippings are related to Gartenhaus' concern for Jews in Europe during the 1930's and 1940's. The correspondence is mainly with Hyman Appleman and related to evangelistic efforts among Jews.

The Home Mission Board began work in Cuba in 1886. Work in the country expanded for about a decade, but by the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, nearly all mission activity had been demoralized. At the close of the war, the Board entered an agreement with the American Baptist Home Mission Society under which the eastern half of Cuba was transferred to the Society and the SBC's Home Mission Board retained the western half. Southern Baptist work in Western Cuba flourished through the 1950s....

Southern Baptist missionary to Jews for the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1921 to 1948, evangelist, and founder of the International Board of Jewish Missions.
