The collection includes five letters written to Amelia Cannon of La Grange County, Ind. between 1861 and 1865. Alfred Shields of the 44th Indiana Infantry Regiment wrote three letters that describe camp life, illnesses, and encounters with Confederate soldiers. Two letters from Amelia's friend Hattie Oiler discuss social activities and Hattie's appreciation of practical jokes. Three pencil sketches of landscapes show landforms, possibly depicting topography near Civil War encampments. Amelia likely wrote the original poems in the collection.
