Letters primarily concern Roberts' residence with relatives at Owensboro, Ky., residence in Louisville while employed there, service in the Mexican and Civil Wars, travels and conditions in the southwest between the wars, employment after the Civil War on the steamer, R.E. Lee, and his poor health. Also included is his parole after his capture at Vicksburg in 1863.

Todd and Maria Innes Todd, daughter of Judge Harry Innes, an early Frankfort settler and the first Judge of the United States Court for the District of Kentucky. Humphrey Marshall, the grandson of politician and historian Humphrey Marshall (1760-1841), was a politician, attorney, and Confederate general. Born in 1812 in Frankfort, Marshall graduated from West Point in 1832 and briefly served in the military before resigning his commission to pursue a career in law and politics.
