Mattie Verhoeff Fortune : papers, 1891-1936.

Material collected by Fortune relating to the 1892 disappearance of her brother, John Verhoeff, during Robert Peary's 1891-1892 Greenland Expedition. The collection includes correspondence to Mattie from John about the expedition, and from Peary and others concerning her missing brother; a biographical sketch of John and transcriptions of several letters sent to Mattie during the expedition; miscellaneous items such as calling cards from Verhoeff and Peary; and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, compiled by Mattie chronincling John's trip to Greenland, his mysterious disappearance, and search efforts.
